On a bright Sunday morning a select party of Udon Expat Club members
gathered at the Udon Thani Railway Station, Platform 1 for an 11 Baht Train Ride to Nong Khai. With a Thai delay we left Udon.
On our arrival in Nong Khai we were met by a fgroup of fellow members who transferred us to the Nagarina which was berthed on the River awaiting our arrival. We joined the other members who were already at the launching site. Close to the shore was a place to retire and relax before heat and humidity became to much to bear.
Embarkation was at 14.00 hrs. The on board luncheon was simple but nice where about 40 people enjoyed having lunch on the deck that was especially prepared for meals. The boat slowly slided in a northerly direction, the wind was docile, the Sun bright. The Mekong was at a higher than normal water level, so it was an adventure to sail under the low Friendship Bridge. After all had eaten we were entertained by Herman on Guitar and Richard on Harmonica, giving a performance which was good though not outstanding, but was designed to appeal to the members to enjoy themselves.
On either side of the river we saw interesting scenes, On the Thai side of the Mekong, children splashed playfully in the water, where on the Laos side there was no hurry at both edges where slowness and patience are virtues.
Later on the boat drinks were served and new friendships were made, both with the Farang and also with the Thai wives and girl friends.
After the trip some of the members went sight seeing in Downtown Nong Khai or others had some drinks before going homewards to Udon,
It was a very successful and well organised outing, which will be
repeated later on in the year as an evening event.
